A New York state judge set a hearing for next week over New York City’s Covid-19 vaccine mandate for municipal workers.
New York Supreme Court Justice
on Tuesday set the Dec. 14 hearing to determine whether a temporary restraining order would be ordered for the requirement.
The hearing will come shortly after Mayor
Bill de Blasio
said the city would also require private-sector workers to be vaccinated by Dec. 27. That policy affects about 184,000 businesses.
New York City’s vaccine mandate for public employees, which was announced Oct. 20, remains in effect. The order ended a testing option for the city’s more than 160,000 municipal workers, including police officers, firefighters and sanitation workers, and required them to get their first Covid-19 shot by Oct. 29. Teachers and healthcare workers were already required to be vaccinated.
Mr. de Blasio’s press secretary, said on Twitter the mandate hasn’t been blocked and that a judge won’t decide until the argument date.
The bulk of New York City residents are currently vaccinated against Covid-19, according to city data. About 78% have received at least one dose of vaccine, while about 70% are fully vaccinated, according to the city.
Federal vaccine mandates are also facing legal battles. A U.S. judge on Tuesday blocked President
Covid-19 vaccine mandate for employees of federal contractors.
Federal employees either need to be vaccinated or get regularly tested for the virus. A senior administration official recently told The Wall Street Journal that most of the 3.5 million federal employees are fully vaccinated.
A federal appeals court in Cincinnati, meanwhile, is considering whether to reinstate the administration’s rules that require businesses with more than 100 workers to ensure their employees are vaccinated or tested weekly for Covid-19. That federal mandate, which covers roughly 84 million workers, is supposed to go into effect Jan. 4.
